What Dental Problems Need Emergency Care?

Severe Tooth Pain

Throbbing pain that keeps you up at night or does not ease with over-the-counter pain relief often points to deep decay or an infected nerve. The sooner a dentist finds the cause, the more treatment options you are likely to have.

Facial or Gum Swelling

Swelling in your gums, cheek or jaw can be a sign of a dental abscess, which is a pocket of infection. Infections do not clear up on their own and can spread, so swelling needs a prompt dental exam.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

A crack or break can expose the inner layers of the tooth, causing pain and sensitivity. Even if it does not hurt, a broken tooth can split further when you chew, so it is wise to have it checked quickly.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out adult tooth is one of the most time-sensitive dental emergencies. Getting to a dentist within about an hour gives the tooth the greatest chance of being placed back and reattaching.

Lost Filling or Crown

When a filling or crown comes out, the tooth underneath is exposed and can break or become sensitive. It is not usually an after-hours emergency, but you should book a visit within a day or two.

Dental Trauma

A fall, sports injury or accident can damage teeth, gums and the jaw even when it does not look serious. A dental exam and X-rays can show hidden damage, such as a root fracture, before it causes bigger problems.

What to Do During a Dental Emergency

Knocked-Out Tooth

Pick the tooth up by the crown, the white part, and do not touch the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently in milk or water for a few seconds without scrubbing. Try to place it back in the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If you cannot, keep it in a cup of milk and call us right away. Do not try to put a baby tooth back in.

Broken Tooth

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water and save any broken pieces in a clean container. Hold a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. If there is a sharp edge, cover it with dental wax or sugar-free gum to protect your tongue and cheek, and call us to book.

Facial Swelling

Hold a cold compress on the outside of your face for 15 minutes at a time, and do not apply heat. Call us as soon as you notice swelling.

Lost Filling or Crown

Keep the crown in a safe container and bring it to your appointment. Avoid chewing on that side. A temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can cover the tooth for a short time, but never use household glue. Call us to book a visit within a day or two.

Severe Toothache

Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently to remove any trapped food. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the package, and use a cold compress on your cheek. Do not place a pill directly on your gum, as it can burn the tissue. Call us to be seen.

⚠️ Medical emergency warning: If swelling spreads to your eye or neck, makes it hard to breathe or swallow, or comes with a high fever, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Why Choose Barton Dental for Emergency Care?

Same-Day Appointments

We set aside time in our schedule each day for dental emergencies. When you call, we offer the soonest available appointment, often the same day.

Weekdays and Saturday Hours

Dental emergencies do not wait for a day off. We have later weekday hours and are open Saturday mornings, so you can be seen around work and family.

A Team of General Dentists

With a team of general dentists on our team, we have more chairs and more flexibility to fit in urgent visits. Your care is provided by a dentist registered with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario.

Emergency Triage by Phone

When you call, our team asks about your symptoms so we can decide how quickly you need to be seen and tell you what to do in the meantime.

New Patients Welcome

You do not need to be a current patient to get emergency care. We see new patients every week and can set up your file when you arrive.

Emergency Dental Treatments We Provide

All emergency care at Barton Dental is provided by general dentists.

Emergency Tooth Extraction

When a tooth is too damaged or infected to save, removing it can relieve pain and stop an infection from spreading. We explain replacement options before we begin.

Root Canal Treatment

A root canal removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside the tooth. It can relieve severe toothache and may allow you to keep your natural tooth.

Dental Crowns

After a large break or a root canal, a crown covers and protects the tooth. We can place a temporary crown at your emergency visit when needed.

Treatment for Broken Teeth

Depending on the size of the break, we may repair the tooth with bonding, a filling or a crown to restore its shape and protect it from further damage.

Treatment for Dental Trauma

After an injury, we check your teeth, gums and jaw, splint loose teeth when needed, and monitor injured teeth over the following weeks.

How Much Does Emergency Dental Care Cost?

The cost of an emergency dental visit depends on what is causing your problem and what treatment you need. We cannot give an exact price until your dentist has examined you, but we always explain your costs before treatment begins.

Examination

Most visits begin with an emergency exam, also called a limited exam. Your dentist focuses on the problem area to find the cause.

X-Rays and Diagnostics

X-rays show what is happening below the gum line, such as an infection at the root or a crack. Your dentist will only take the images needed.

Complexity and Treatment

A simple filling costs less than a root canal or extraction. If your problem needs more than one visit, we will explain each step and its cost.

Insurance and Payment Options

Many dental insurance plans cover part of an emergency exam and treatment. We bill many insurers directly, including Dofasco, Stelco and United Steelworkers plans, and we accept the Canada Dental Care Plan. OHIP does not usually cover dental care in a dental office. Ask us about payment options if you need to spread out the cost.
