Understanding What Crowns & Bridges Are

You may hear dentists refer to "crowns" and "bridges". These procedures are crafted to repair the structure, appearance, and function of your teeth. Crowns are put on teeth and can restore them to their normal shape and size and protect the entire strength of a tooth while matching occlusal forces. They encompass the gumline of an entire tooth. Bridges may be used to replace multiple missing teeth and consist of two or more crowns attached to your natural tooth or dental implants.

How This Restoration Process Works

Placement & Preparation

We will assess whether a crown or bridge is the ideal fix for your issues. In the case of crowns and bridges, it is necessary to reshape the tooth in order for it to fit properly by removing a portion of the enamel. Bridges also require that the teeth adjacent to a gap (abutment teeth) be modified in order to take retention from these prepared tooth surfaces.

Impressions & Bonding

Tooth impressions will be taken to prepare your personalized crown and bridge restoration, which should uniquely fit your teeth. The teeth may be covered with a temporary crown or bridge to protect them until the permanent restoration is delivered. Once your permanent crown or bridge fits just right, we'll remove the temporary one and fit the new one through bonding.

What Type Of Patient Can Receive Crowns & Bridges?

The adjacent teeth supporting the bridge are prepared by reshaping them for crown placement. Impressions are taken to create a custom bridge that fits snugly. A temporary bridge protects your teeth, while a permanent bridge is fabricated. When the permanent bridge is ready, it is bonded into place, completing your smile.

  • Patients Treated Previously for Root Canal: After root canal therapy, our dentist may apply a crown onto the treated tooth which can add protection and full functionality.
  • Large Fillings: Crowns can be used to safeguard teeth with large fillings that are at risk of breakage to prove durability and longevity.
