Restore the Natural Look and Feel of Teeth

In our dental practice, the most frequently conducted treatment is the application of dental fillings, which play a crucial role in repairing and restoring teeth, as well as preventing decay and infection. We prefer to use composite resin fillings that match the colour of your teeth over traditional metal amalgam fillings. These resin fillings bond effectively with the tooth structure and are suitable for smaller cavities, meaning less drilling is required. This approach not only maintains the natural appearance and feel of your teeth but also preserves their strength and functionality. Our aim is to offer high-quality dental care that is minimally invasive, comfortable, and effective for our patients.

What makes fillings essential?

While some might consider getting a tooth filling a mundane or non-urgent task, often delaying it until there’s discomfort, it’s crucial to treat cavities promptly for your dental health. Here are the reasons why:

  1. Cavities can expand if not filled early, leading to larger and more complex issues.
  2. Unfilled cavities can progress to painful infections or abscesses; a timely filling can avert these complications.
  3. A cavity can weaken your tooth, increasing the risk of breakage; fillings help restore the tooth’s strength and resilience.
  4. Addressing cavities early with fillings is cost-effective, preventing the need for more extensive and expensive dental treatments later.
  5. Fillings can alleviate sensitivity to temperature extremes, enhancing oral comfort.
  6. Timely fillings contribute to preserving your natural smile for a longer duration.

In essence, promptly taking care of tooth fillings is essential for safeguarding your dental health and avoiding more serious problems in the future.

What is the process of filling a cavity?

Gentle Freezing

Before beginning the cavity filling process, we make sure to thoroughly numb your gums. We recognize that the idea of numbing can be a source of anxiety for some patients, but it’s an essential step to guarantee a comfortable, pain-free experience. By carefully applying a local anesthetic to the area around your tooth, we ensure that both your tooth and the surrounding region are numb, significantly reducing any discomfort you might feel during the procedure.

Filling the tooth

After confirming that the numbing process has been comfortably achieved, we move on to meticulously clean and prepare your tooth. Next, an adhesive gel is applied to the tooth in need of treatment. Following this, we shape and sculpt a composite resin, which is a white filling material, to seamlessly match the contours and bite of your tooth.

Curing the Composite

The composite resin used in your tooth filling or bonding is set and hardened using a specialized LED light, which rapidly solidifies the material. Following this, the dentist meticulously inspects your tooth, making any required adjustments to ensure a perfect fit. The procedure concludes with a final polish, giving your tooth a natural and seamless appearance.

What is the Cost of a Dental Filling in Hamilton?

Dental fillings are a routine and effective way to prevent dental problems, and as such, most insurance companies provide coverage for them. With a typical insurance plan, the cost can range from $0 to $100+. However, without dental insurance, expect to pay anywhere from $120 to $300 or more, particularly if multiple tooth fillings are required simultaneously.

When determining the actual cost of your treatment, we take into account several important factors such as your current oral health, the number of dental fillings required, the location of the cavity in your mouth, whether new x-rays are required, the amount of time needed by our dental team to meet your specific needs, and the equipment and supplies necessary to serve all your requirements.

Promptly filling cavities is vital to us since fillings can prevent more invasive treatments, serious dental pain, and ensure your overall health and well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tooth-coloured fillings, commonly referred to as composite fillings, are composed of a mix of plastic and fine glass particles. Their key advantage is their ability to closely match the natural colour of your teeth, offering a more visually appealing solution than traditional metal fillings. In contrast, traditional fillings are crafted from an amalgam of various metals, which typically includes mercury, silver, tin, and copper.

Indeed, composite fillings are considered safe. They are crafted from biocompatible materials, meaning they are generally well-accepted by the body without adverse reactions. Additionally, composite fillings are frequently favoured over traditional amalgam fillings by many patients due to their mercury-free composition.

Composite fillings, when maintained properly, can have a lifespan of up to 10 years or more. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are crucial to ensure that your fillings remain in optimal condition and to identify and address any issues at an early stage.

The process of getting a composite filling is generally not painful. Your dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort during the procedure. After the filling is placed, you may experience some sensitivity, but this should subside within a few days.

Composite fillings are versatile and can be applied to most teeth, but they may not be the best choice in every case. For instance, in teeth with extensive decay or significant damage, a composite filling might not provide adequate strength. Your dentist will assess your individual case to determine whether a composite filling is the most suitable option for your dental needs.

The cost of composite fillings is often covered by many dental insurance plans, although the extent of coverage can differ based on your particular plan. To understand your coverage details and any potential out-of-pocket expenses you might incur, it’s advisable to consult with your insurance provider.

Just like natural teeth, composite fillings require regular care, which includes consistent brushing and flossing. Additionally, it’s important for patients to maintain regular dental checkups to ensure that the filling remains intact and is functioning effectively.

The procedure for placing a composite filling usually lasts between 30 to 60 minutes for each tooth, with the duration varying based on the cavity’s size and location. Patients should anticipate spending a few hours at the dental office to accommodate the entire process, which includes time for numbing, preparation, and the filling itself.
