When is a Tooth Extraction Required?

While a tooth extraction may not be an ideal procedure, there are situations where it becomes necessary to prevent serious health risks. Understandably, the thought of tooth removal can make many patients nervous, but rest assured that dental extractions are common and typically involve minimal discomfort.

Several common reasons for tooth extraction include:

  1. Baby teeth that struggle to come out naturally.
  2. Dental overcrowding.
  3. Severe tooth infections.
  4. Broken or damaged teeth.

It’s important to note that experiencing one of these conditions doesn’t automatically mean tooth extraction is the only solution. Alternative treatment options may be available. Early detection is key.

If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, please inform us promptly:

  1. Intense tooth pain.
  2. Pain that worsens when pressure is applied or while chewing.
  3. Jaw pain or stiffness.
  4. Swollen gums.
  5. Signs of gum disease, such as discolouration, bleeding, or bad breath.

The Dental Extraction Process

Although tooth extraction can be anxiety-inducing for many, our patients at Barton Dental frequently discover that the procedure is surprisingly swift and virtually painless!

Dental extraction is a routine outpatient procedure conducted by skilled oral surgeons, typically completed in just one visit. To better prepare our patients, we like to simplify the process into three straightforward steps, which we outline below.

Weighing the Options

At Barton Dental, we prioritize exploring all possible alternatives before suggesting oral surgery. During your initial consultation, our skilled doctor will meticulously evaluate your symptoms and engage in a comprehensive discussion of all potential solutions to safeguard your dental health. Dental extraction can frequently be circumvented, but in cases where it becomes unavoidable, rest assured that we will guide you in selecting the most appropriate approach to address your dental condition.

The Tooth Extraction Procedure

Based on the preference of the dentist and the patient, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the areas where the tooth will be extracted. Sedation may also be available if it’s required.

With the use of specialized dental tools, the doctor will then begin the process of gently loosening your tooth. This may require making a few small incisions in the gum tissue, or it may be as simple as moving the tooth back and forth with a pair of forceps until the tooth is ready to be lifted from its socket. This is largely dependent upon the state of the tooth, whether it has experienced significant decay or is broken below the gum line. No matter what is required, our techniques are minimally invasive to ensure minimal discomfort and swift recovery.

Once the tooth has been extracted, the infected area is cleaned and disinfected.

Recovery & Aftercare

Once the procedure is complete, your doctor will apply a piece of gauze to the extraction area and ask you to apply firm, consistent pressure to slow any bleeding. Keep in mind that a little bleeding is normal during recovery, and nothing to be alarmed about. Many of our patients are often thrilled to discover that any discomfort they were experiencing prior to extraction is immediately alleviated following the extraction procedure.

Our office will provide you with aftercare instructions, including:

  • How to care for your mouth as it heals.
  • What to expect.
  • What to do if you experience complications.

We would be happy to schedule a follow-up appointment to address any additional concerns you may have.

Cost of a dental extraction in Hamilton

The cost of tooth extraction can vary based on several factors. With a typical insurance plan, the cost of a tooth removal typically ranges from approximately $100 to $200 or more as an out-of-pocket expense. We are more than happy to provide you with a preliminary quote that you can submit to your insurance provider to determine your expected out-of-pocket expenses.

For those without insurance, the cost is generally around $200 to $600 or more per tooth.

It’s important to note that no dental practice can provide you with an accurate quote over the phone because your treatment plan must be tailored to your specific needs, which can only be determined after a thorough oral examination. However, there are two broad categories that dental extractions fall into, which may offer a general idea of the potential cost and reasons why:

Simple Tooth Extraction

A simple extraction is performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth. These can be performed by a general dentist, using local anesthesia. A simple extraction of an accessible tooth without complication would merit a lower cost estimate.

Surgical Tooth Extraction

A surgical extraction is a form of dental surgery, typically performed by an oral surgeon at a dental surgery center. This is a more complex procedure than a simple tooth extraction and involves the removal of a tooth that cannot easily be seen or reached, either because it has not fully erupted or it has broken off at the gum line. A surgical tooth extraction, requiring a great amount of consideration, delicate care, and expertise will come at a greater cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many people believe wisdom teeth removal is a rite of passage. In reality, wisdom teeth only need to be removed if they become impacted or otherwise interfere with your jaw and teeth.
Thanks to modern dental techniques and equipment, tooth extractions are virtually painless. Many patients are surprised by how quick and easy the procedure actually is! Of course, some discomfort is to be expected, but we will provide you with aftercare instructions to help keep you as comfortable as possible during the quick healing process.
About an hour after your procedure, you may remove the gauze sponges that have been placed in your mouth and have something to eat. Be sure to eat only soft foods for the first 24 hours. Be sure to avoid hot foods and drinking from straws for several hours.
We will provide you with aftercare instructions specific to your needs at your appointment. Here are some general things you can do after a tooth extraction or dental surgery more generally to minimize the risk of complications and encourage a speedy recovery:
  • Avoid spitting, mouth rinsing, blowing your nose, using a straw, and smoking in the first 24 hours after tooth extraction.
  • Don’t touch the extraction site with your finger or tongue.
  • Avoid hot foods and drinks.
  • Don’t take aspirin because it inhibits blood clotting.
  • Avoid physical activities and exercise.
For simple tooth removal, the recovery time is usually around 7 to 10 days. However, for more complex cases, such as surgical tooth extraction, or wisdom tooth removal, expect a recovery period of around 2 weeks. No matter the complexity of the procedure, you should feel very little discomfort during recovery.
Barring any unforeseen complications, expect a typical tooth extraction to take around 45 minutes or less.
